HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN MUSIC?

In today’s world of instant expectation, music lessons provide a valuable way to teach children about the patience, commitment and hard work that is required to really succeed at anything in life.  With new repertoire always being written, there will always be more and to learn with music, so it is truly an opportunity to develop skills over a lifetime.

In order to keep on-track and measure progress, lesson structure is essential, identifying both short term and long term goals, and planning a course towards those learning outcomes.  Forte programmes are structured both into age-group based course and also further divided into levels helping younger students see measurable progress whilst continuing to acquire skills over a longer period.

Grading Structure

Even once a student moves into individual instruction, external examinations provide graduated goals and measurement.  Most of the international examination organisations offering assessments in New Zealand use an eight grade structure leading up to diploma qualifications.  While we would recommend students work towards the more traditional classical exam syllabuses, we also support contemporary exam bodies such as Rockschool
.
When starting out on a course of musical study, children generally have the best opportunity to develop the overall musical skills over and above the instrumental playing techniques that allow them the ability to develop long term mastery.  Well structured courses will start out with elementary musical skills that develop a sense of pitch and rhythm, gradually building to ensure a solid foundation for instrumental success.

Music For Kids

Our Forte courses were developed with this specifically in mind and over the years that our partner organisation here in Auckland (offering Forte course lessons in Glenfield and Henderson) we have seen the fantastic results that properly developed courses can provide for students.

While only a small percentage of students will take their music learning through for the 10 or more years it takes to get to a high professional (teacher) level, we believe all students will receive tangible benefits from taking a course of musical study.
