How To Get Started?Different students can have varying requirements but at the Forte School of Music, we generally recommend a practice pad is adequate for the first 3 to 6 months of lessons. Older students tend to want to get onto the whole kit as soon as possible, but the trick to mastering the drums is to get a sound grounding in rudimentary stick techniques. Regular and repetitive practice on these skills gives you the tools to master a whole variety of musical styles in the longer term. Because the cost of a practice pad and sticks is a lot less than a full kit, it makes sense to get started this way.

Full Kit
In recent years, low-cost kits from China have become available for lesson than $200. Whilst these type of instruments do provide all the parts of a full kit, the low price is a reflection of quality, and remember your drum kit is likely to get a “beating”. Sticking to well known brands or better still, purchasing from one of Auckland’ recognised music stores, means you should end up with something that will be both rewarding to play and also provide a great deal of enjoyment into the future.
