Grading StructureEven once a student moves into individual instruction, external examinations provide graduated goals and measurement. Most of the international examination organisations offering assessments in New Zealand use an eight grade structure leading up to diploma qualifications. While we would recommend students work towards the more traditional classical exam syllabuses, we also support contemporary exam bodies such as Rockschool
. When starting out on a course of musical study, children generally have the best opportunity to develop the overall musical skills over and above the instrumental playing techniques that allow them the ability to develop long term mastery. Well structured courses will start out with elementary musical skills that develop a sense of pitch and rhythm, gradually building to ensure a solid foundation for instrumental success. |
